Miami Beach United and City of Miami Beach Team Up to Implement “Residents Right To Know” Measures

In 2017 Miami Beach United developed the concept of "Residents Right to Know" in support of the organization’s goals of improving communication between City Hall and Miami Beach residents in service of better quality of life for all, and to raise awareness of and resident participation in the municipal decision-making process. As a result, as the Miami Herald wrote at the time, “The city will be required to email resident associations and individuals who request to be notified when public or private projects might affect their quality of life. That could range from public infrastructure improvements to private real estate developments that require city approvals.”

Passed in July 2017, the ordinance was crafted with the specific goals of providing residents of Miami Beach:

    • the process to register on the City of Miami Beach’s (CMB) website to receive targeted and timely information pertaining to the community in which they live,

    • the ability to participate in City processes by sending resolutions and question proposed actions that impacts residents' quality of life.

    • provide meaningful feedback to City Management and elected officials.

  • ensure that Management and elected officials of the City of Miami Beach will consider the rights of residents and work to help improve the quality of life for all.

Since the City adopted the Residents Right to Know Ordinance, Miami Beach United has worked collaboratively with the Commission and Staff to ensure that as many of the Ordinance requirements as possible could be put into place as quickly as possible. Now when residents visit the City of Miami Beach website they can click on RESIDENTS and find the link to RESIDENTS RIGHT TO KNOW under ENGAGEMENT TOOLBOX, where they can sign up to receive information of interest and get notified, via email, in advance of actions that may affect their quality of life. In addition, the website now features links to RESIDENT CONNECT and GO BONDS which allow residents to request specific information and give feedback to those Staff members working on various projects.
