MBU City Policy Initiatives

INFRASTRUCTURE

A clear understanding of our infrastructure capacity is crucial if we are to undertake serious long-term planning. MBU is advocating for a third party study of the capacity of our infrastructure, focused on potable water, sanitary sewer, electrical capacity, and traffic. The implications for public safety are critical, including police and fire response, ambulance times, and evacuation. While each individual new development considers some of these impacts, the issues of overall system capacity are not considered.

BEACHFRONT MANAGEMENT

We are concerned with the amount of public beachfront being given over to concessionaires. Our aim is to ensure that our beaches remain primarily public, and that private concession areas are restricted and attractive.

RESOLUTION APPROVAL FORM

We have proposed to the Commission that the form that accompanies every proposed resolution and Ordinance be amended to include the following question:

“Does this resolution/ordinance benefit a particular person or business? If so which ones(s)?”

This doesn’t mean a resolution or ordinance is bad if the answer is yes, but it should be transparent.

MOTORIZED VESSEL EXCLUSION ZONE

We are proposing a Motorized Vessel exclusion Zone extending 1,500 feet into the ocean from the beach to protect swimmers, snorkelers, and the existing and new artificial reefs and marine environment.

MOVING TO ELECTRIC VEHICLES IN OUR PARKS

Our current trash pickups vehicles are noisy, and create fumes and pollution. We are urging the City to replace these with electric vehicles.

ONGOING INVOLVEMENT IN COMMISSION ACTIONS

We continue to monitor and comment on every Commission agenda for items we believe are important and of city-wide significance. We also keep a scorecard of how each commissioner voted on our recommendations.
